LibreOffice (Windows, macOS e Linux)
LibreOffice is a free and open source suite of programs for work currently considered the best free alternative to Microsoft Office. It includes programs for word processing, spreadsheet processing, editorial content creation, and presentation making, all of which support open file formats and Microsoft Office file formats, including DOC.
For Writer, the word processing software part of the suite, has absolutely nothing to envy to the commercial counterpart of Microsoft. In fact, it includes all the main features needed to make the best use of a text processing and visualization tool as well as desktop publishing. Furthermore, it is completely in cittàn, as is the rest of the suite.

OpenOffice (Windows, macOS e Linux)
Another of the solutions that I think it is appropriate to include in this article dedicated to the best programs to open DOC files is OpenOffice. This is another open source productivity suite, the one from which the aforementioned LibreOffice originates. You can download and use it for free on your computer.
It includes an application, also called Writer, thanks to which it is possible to open and create text documents, including, of course, those in DOC format. Its use is intended for both domestic users and real professionals looking for a good level office tool but at no cost.

Microsoft Office (Windows e macOS)
When it comes to programs to open DOC files, it cannot fail to come to mind Word, the most famous word processor in the world included in the above package Microsoft Office. Since version 2007, Word has introduced support for new DOCX file formats which are more compact and standards compliant than the classic DOC, but support for this old format is still perfectly guaranteed in both writing and reading.
The software is paid but is available in a free trial version that allows you to test all its functions for a limited period of time (if you remember correctly, I told you about it in my guide on how to download Office for free).

WPS Office (Windows e Linux)
WPS Office is another free office suite that allows you to view, create and share documents that are compatible with Microsoft Office. It is not available in cittàn but for those who "chew" at least a little English it is still usable without any kind of problem.
It contains an application through which you can open DOC documents as well as PDFs, TXT files and so on. The software also includes advanced text formatting options as well as the ability to add images, shapes and more to your documents.

AbiWord (Windows and Linux)
AbiWord is an extremely fast and compact word processor that is an alternative to the productivity suites I have already told you about in the previous lines. It is the ideal solution for all those who only need a word processing program and not all the other software usually included in the business suites.
It is completely in cittàn and, although not particularly accurate, it also includes spell checking. It supports all major digital document formats: not only Microsoft Word DOC files but also LibreOffice files and simple RTF documents.

Ashampoo Office (Windows)
Ashampoo Office is a PC office suite that includes software for word processing, spreadsheet processing and presentation making. Its user interface is not as simple to use as that of the latest editions of Office but on a functional level it has little to envy to other more expensive suites.
It supports all Microsoft Office file formats, including Word DOC. The software is paid but is available in a free trial version that allows you to test all its functions for a period of 30 days.
Ashampoo Office is only available for Windows. To immediately download (and possibly also purchase) the suite on your computer click here.
Are you using a Mac and are you looking for a program that allows you to open DOC files and, why not, also to try your hand at creating other text documents? Then prece don't try Pages? This is commercial word processing and desktop publishing software made available directly from Apple for macOS thanks to which you can open and create text documents as well as create brochures, posters and even flyers.
The program has a very elegant and friendly user interface, the controls are extremely intuitive and reactive and various templates are available to create text documents of various types in an extremely simple and fast way.
Pages is a program available only and exclusively for macOS. To immediately download the software to your computer click here. Note that for some Macs (newer ones) Pages is available “as standard”.
iA Writer (macOS)
Also for Mac, another program to open DOC files that I suggest you take into serious consideration is iA Writer. It is a popular plain text editor with markdown support that has won multiple awards as the best app for bitten apple devices.
The program is for a fee and stands out for its clean and essential style. In fact, it offers a no-frills environment in which to focus on reading texts as well as writing them without getting lost in the infinite accessory features offered by other software belonging to the same category.
iA Writer is available only and exclusively for macOS and can be downloaded directly from the Mac App Store. To immediately download the software to your computer click here.
Solutions for smartphones and tablets (Android and iOS)
